There are many simple ways of locating self help group meetings in your
immediate area. Of course the larger the metropolitan area - the wider the
variety and number of meetings available. It's quite surprising though -
especially pertaining to AA meetings - how many can be found in quite remote and
rural areas of the country.
1. Check your local phone book - white and yellow pages. Look for
AA or Alcoholics Anonymous. In large cities - you may also find Al-Anon,
Gamblers Anonymous, Cocaine Anonymous, Narcotics Anonymous, and virtually an
endless list of such groups. Remember - if you make contact with one -
that person will likely be able to provide contact information for others.
Also - if you don't get a positive response from your first attempt - call
someone else.
2. Check our
Recovery Clubhouse Directory Page
to see if there is a clubhouse to visit or phone in your area.
Note: All clubhouses are not listed. We only list those that have
been submitted to us for listing.
3. Call most any treatment center
facility in your area. Many are associated with local hospitals.
Most, but not all, treatment center facilities are likely to have contacts
available for 12 Step and other self help group meetings - or at least contact
telephone numbers for them.
4. Help Hotline Services - like Suicide
Prevention - 911 - etc. As a last resort - only. Don't tie up
emergency lines for simple information requests. Of course - if you feel
your situation is an emergency - don't hesitate.
5. Newspapers - Many AA and other self help
groups have toll free numbers listed in the ad sections of newspapers.
6. ONLINE - there are hundreds - even
thousands of listings - which may or may not be accurate. It's an enormous
task even to think about listing meetings all over the US - not to mention the
world. AA has meetings in over 116 countries now. Nearly a million
registered in the US alone - and probably only 1 out of 5 meetings are
'registered' with AA World Services.
Here are some good websites to start a search - for online and real 'face to
face' meetings.
